Your thyroid is a butterfly-shaped organ that controls a wide array of critical functions in your body like metabolism, circadian rhythm, mental health, menstrual cycles, strength, and more.

Signs of thyroid are often overlooked because they are so similar to symptoms of other diseases. In fact, thyroid disease is one of the most underdiagnosed and misdiagnosed illnesses in America. According to the American Thyroid Association, over 20 million Americans have some form of thyroid disease, with over 60% of sufferers undiagnosed

This news may seem frightening; however, thyroid disease is treatable.

Risk Factors

  • Women (5 to 8 times more likely)
  • Recently given birth
  • Family history
  • 60+ years old
  • Have an autoimmune disease such as Celiac
  • Received radiation treatment on the neck or upper chest
  • Had thyroid surgery

Symptoms of Thyroid Dysfunction

Symptoms of thyroid disease vary from patient to patient and can depend on where the individual falls on the thyroid function spectrum. Typically, a normal, healthy range for the Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) falls between 0.5 to 5.0 mIU/L.

Hypothyroid (underactive thyroid) is when the thyroid fails to produce enough thyroid hormone to stimulate the body’s necessary functions. When someone is hypothyroid they experience extreme fatigue, weight gain, and brain fog.

Hyperthyroid (overactive thyroid) is when the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone and results in nervousness, unexplained weight loss, and sleep problems.
